He’s a Cowboy, Ninja and Viking. Universal is aiming to pick up a project that Disney dumped for being “too edgy” and they’re developing with director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Stranger Than Fiction, Quantum of Solace, Machine Gun Preacher). Deadline reports the comic book adaptation Cowboy Ninja Viking, adapted by writers Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese (Zombieland, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Deadpool), was recently picked up by Universal and they have set Forster to make this next after he finishes World War Z, due out in December. The intention is to be in production this year, possibly even before WWZ comes out.

The Cowboy Ninja Viking (created by writer A.J. Lieberman & artist Riley Rossmo) is the creation of “Dr. Sebastian Ghislain”, a psychotherapist who recruits Multiple Personality Disorder patients to produce a unit of counter-intelligence agents called Triplets. But what happens when those guys become out of control assassins? That’s when the deadliest Triplet of them all – Cowboy Ninja Viking – is called in to take down his own brethren. We first heard this was in the works a few years ago, but only now are getting the story about Disney leaving it for Universal to take. The film will be produced by Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Mark Gordon & Bryan Zuriff at MG360, a joint venture between The Mark Gordon Company & Management 360.

I’m a fan of Marc Forster, for the most part, and I hope he’s ready to deliver something badass with this, because it sounds so awesome that I hope it turns out awesome as well. As expected, they’re hoping to turn this into a franchise, I’m just curious to see how it turns out anyway. We’ll keep an eye on this as it develops.
